SKIRMISH LECTURE: APRIL 22, 7PM AT THE HADDON FORTNIGHTLY “Naked and Torn by the Grapeshot’, History, Archaeology & Reactions to Red Bank Hessian Mass Burials”
Once again, the Historical Society of Haddonfield is participating in the annual Haddonfield Skirmish on Saturday, June 1st.
Leading up to the Skirmish, we will be co-hosting with the Skirmish Committee, on April 22 at the Haddon Fortnightly, the program, “Naked and Torn by the Grapeshot, History, Archaeology & Reactions to Red Bank Hessian Mass Burials” led by Dr. Jen Jenofsky and Wade P. Catts.
The Historical Society was fortunate to have Dr. Jenofsky speak to us in October 2022 about the then recent discovery of battlefield remains during an archaeological dig in early 2022 at Red Bank Battlefield Park. Dr. Jenofsky and Mr. Catts will discuss further discoveries about the Hessian soldiers buried at Battlefield Park. Join us at 7pm at the Haddon Fortnightly for this very interesting discussion.
Dr. Janofsky, a Rowan University history professor, is also the curator of Whitall House and the Red Bank Battlefield. She is the project director for the archaeological survey of Red Bank Battlefield.
NEXT BOOK CLUB DISCUSSION – April 29 at HPL
Due to Passover, the book club date has been changed from April 22 to the 29th. Please join us as we meet jointly with the Public Library’s book club Book Club meets on April 29 at 7PM in the library. Attendees will discuss the 2023 thrilling true crime title: The Art Thief : A True Story of Love, Crime, and a Dangerous Obsession by Michael Finkel. General Meeting & Speaker: May 22
Jane Peters Estes presents: The Battle of Gettysburg, Where were the Women?
From the best known to the most obscure, this program discusses the many roles filled by women during the deadliest battle of the Civil War. With information gleaned from diaries, letters and newspapers of the period, many parts of this program a re told in the actual words of the women who have lived through the battle. This program is free and will be held May 22, 2024 at 7pm in the Lutheran Church on Wood Lane’s Hall.
HADDONFIELD SKIRMISH – June 1
The Skirmish is hosted by The Friends of the Indian King — a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization — which works to preserve and advance the Indian King Tavern Museum, the first New Jersey State historic site, and raise public awareness of the museum and its educational programs. There will also be interesting events leading up to the Skirmish including a debate between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Here is a list of Skirmish Events.
